Stories

With the majority of New Zealanders living in urban areas, many school-aged children may be unfamiliar with where their food is sourced from. Farmer Time for Schools can help bridge this gap and better connect students to their food and the farmers who grow it.

Farmer Time for Schools is a unique educational programme (Years 1-8) that brings farming directly to students through virtual classroom sessions.

Students taking part in the programme regularly chat live to their matched farmer from their classrooms. In these sessions they discuss ideas, ask questions, share knowledge and gain a ‘real-time’ understanding of farming across the seasons. This connection allows a one-to-one relationship to develop between a single class and one farmer.

Other benefits include:

  • Children can practically see how what they are learning at school is applied on-farm.

  • Providing an opportunity to humanise agriculture and farmers.

  • Complementing existing food and fibre educational programmes to provide greater awareness of the importance of our entire food system.

  • Providing students with insights into potential careers in the food and fibre sector.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If you are a teacher or farmer who is interested in participating, please fill out the sign-up form. Teachers click here. Farmers click here.

You will then be matched by the Farmer Time for Schools Coordinator and receive an introductory email explaining the next steps.

For media or industry enquiries, please fill in the form or email kiaora@farmertime.co.nz.

  • Once farmers and teachers are matched, they work together to schedule a regular time for the call.

Prior to these calls, both parties will discuss and agree on the content to be covered.

The students or teacher may have questions on a topic for the farmer or the farmer may like to show something happening on the farm that is of interest and answer any questions that arise. Each session is unique to what is happening on the farm or what the children are currently learning in the classroom.

  • Farmer Time for Schools is open to primary and intermediate classes - Year 1 to Year 8.

If you are interested in signing up a secondary class please contact the Farmer Time for Schools Coordinator directly.

  • Farmer Time for Schools is a free programme currently supported by Beef + Lamb New Zealand Inc. We are very thankful to our farmers who give their time voluntarily.

  • Farmer Time for Schools is an ongoing programme of digital sessions, and a farmer is connected to one classroom for a full school year. The exact number of calls will be agreed on between the farmer and the teacher, however generally calls happen once a fortnight during term time.

  • On average each call lasts 15-20 minutes, but this can vary to suit the farmer, teacher and age of the students.

  • Farmer Time for Schools is open to all primary producers and different farm types. If you are a teacher that would like to be matched with a specific type of farm please contact the Farmer Time for Schools Coordinator.

  • As long as you have signal around the house or farm office, you can still connect with a class for live virtual sessions and showcase pre-prepared content (for example, send your matched teacher short video clips prior to the call).

  • You will be connected to a school/farmer in a different geographical region. This provides a point of difference to a farm the class might visit in their own locality and allows for interesting conversations about local weather, landscapes and geography.

  • No. The connection between the farmer and class is virtual and due to the matched farm being in a different locality farm visits do not occur. However if you are interested in farm visits go to www.openfarms.co.nz and https://www.dairynzschools.co.nz/visit-info

  • Volunteers don't need to be police vetted under the Children's Act 2014 or the Education and Training Act 2020. However, we ask schools to follow their own safeguarding procedures, including ensuring a teacher is always present during the Farmer Time for Schools virtual sessions. All farmers and teachers signing up to the programme have agreed to the Safeguarding Code of Conduct.
