Get your class involved
Farmer Time for Schools connects your primary or intermediate class with their very own farmer. Students learn more about where their kai comes from and the people that grow it.
With more than 65% of New Zealanders living in major or large urban areas, many school-aged children can be disconnected from where their food comes from. Some may have never visited a working farm. Farmer Time for Schools gives Kiwi kids the opportunity to directly connect with our land, food and farmers.
By bringing farming into the classroom (Years 1-8), it will also give your students an insight into what a career in the food and fibre sector looks like.
Taking part in this programme gives students a window into farm life across a school year, introduces new topics and is a practical way to bring your class curriculum to life.
It’s the simplicity of Farmer Time for Schools which appeals to farmers and teachers alike.
Your class will virtually connect with your very own farmer for 15-20 minutes fortnightly.
Children can ask questions, discuss ideas and gain a real-time understanding of life on a farm.
There are no set units to follow. You and your farmer decide on the content of each session, matching it to current curriculum learnings or on-farm activities.
